Mosquito Borne Illness, West Nile Virus

The mosquito borne illness, West Nile Virus, is carried by the Asian Tiger Mosquito.  The Asian Tiger mosquito is a non-native invasive species that was first documented in Texas in 1985.  Unlike the native brown mosquito that is most active at dusk, the Asian Tiger  Mosquito is active through out the day. Symptoms of West Nile Virus include headache, fever, neck stiffness, joint pains, body aches, diarrhea, or rash. According the the CDC, 70-80% of people who become infected with the mosquito borne illness will not develop any symptoms.  However, 20% will encounter the symptoms from West nile Virus listed above.  In rare cases, less than 1%, severe symptoms such as seizures, coma, tremors, and paralysis exist.  To date there is not a vaccine for the West Nile Virus, thus doctors can only treat symptoms.
