Ants
Ants are one of the most common insects and household nuisances, and also happen to be quite fascinating creatures. There are more than 10,000 species of ants around the world, and can range in size from 0.03 to 2.0 inches, although most are very small. Ants are typically colored either black or red, with a few species being green or metallic.
Ants are social insects that live in colonies or groups that can get up into the millions. Ants in a colony can either be the queen, the female worker, or the male. The queen ant is the only ant that can lay eggs, and spends most of her life doing so. A colony of ants can have either one queen or multiple.
Ants are actually omnivores. They can eat other fungi or insects, and some species of ants have been known to prey on larger animals like reptiles or birds. They are quite intelligent, with chemical signals used to alert other ants of danger or when prospective food sources are near. Ants may be small, but they have such a layered and complex system for their way of life. Despite their unique characteristics, an ant infestation in your home is definitely uninvited and can cause damage.
There are easy ways to get rid of them, such as ant bait or pesticides. You can also seal any potential points of entry and exit for ants; that may be how they gained access into your house in the first place. In addition, try to keep surfaces clean. Ants can survive off of the tiniest crumbs and carry them back to their colony to feed other ants.
